Betsy DeVos Confirmed as U.S. Education Secretary

Betsy DeVos confirmed Education SecretaryEarlier today, Betsy DeVos was confirmed as the 11th Secretary of Education of the United States. DeVos, a billionaire philanthropist from Michigan and advocate of school choice, has been among the most controversial Trump administration cabinet nominees.

In a historic senate vote today, Vice President Pence was called in as a tiebreaker, making the final vote 51-50 in favor of DeVos. This marked the first time in U.S. history that a vice president was called upon to break a tie vote over a presidential cabinet nomination.

Supporters of DeVos believe that she's an avid school reformer who will create competition which will force schools to improve while giving parents more options on where to send their children to school. Opponents criticize her lack of knowledge and experience in the education industry and fear she will cut support of traditional public schools.

DeVos tweeted, "I appreciate the Senate's diligence & am honored to serve as @usedgov Secretary. Let's improve options & outcomes for all US students."
